چکیده

Between 1997 and 1998 the breeding density, nest sites, clutch size and egg dimensions of the magpie (Pica pica) was investigated in a 7 km2 area in the Krapina river valley. We recorded a high breeding density of 4.79 pairs/km2 (during both years). The nests were situated at a height of 1–16 m above ground (mean = 6.74 m). Magpie nests were found in at least 9 species of bushes and trees. We recorded 3–8 eggs in the first clutch (mean = 5.91 eggs). Egg length averaged 33.43 mm, egg breadth 23.35 mm, egg volume 9.288 cm3, egg shape index 1.433 and egg weight 9.22 g. There were no significant differences in egg dimensions between 1997 and 1998 (length: F = 1.79, p = 0.10; breadth: F = 1.41, p = 0.34; volume: F = 1.27, p = 0.52; shape index: F = 1.10, p = 0.78). The positive correlation between egg volume and egg breadth, egg volume and egg length, egg length and egg shape index as well as between egg length and egg breadth were statistically significant. So was the negative correlation between egg breadth and egg shape index. The correlation coefficient (r) between egg volume and egg shape index was near 0.

Differential maternal investment counteracts for late breeding in magpies Pica pica: an experimental study

Reproductive success in many avian populations declines throughout the breeding season. Two hypotheses have gained attention to explain such a decline: the ‘‘timing’’ hypothesis proposes that deteriorating food availability causes the decline in reproductive success (causal effect of breeding time), whereas the ‘‘quality’’ hypothesis proposes that individuals of lower phenotypic quality reprodu...

Is egg-damaging behavior by great spotted cuckoos an accident or an adaptation?

Adult great spotted cuckoos Clamator glandarius damage the eggs of their magpie Pica pica host without removing them from the nest or eating them but by producing the death of the embryo. Observations as well as experiments were used to test several predictions of two different possibilities: great spotted cuckoo egg-damaging behavior is a parasitic tactic resulting from a direct selection proc...

Nest-building activity and laying date influence female reproductive investment in magpies: an experimental study

Nest size or nest-building activity has recently been hypothesized to be a postmating sexually selected signal in monogamous birds: females may assess a male’s parental quality and willingness to invest in reproduction by his participation in nest building. Females may thus adjust their reproductive effort (i.e. clutch size) not only to their own abilities but also to those of their mates. We i...

Cuckoo parasitism and productivity in different magpie subpopulations predict frequencies of the 457bp allele: a mosaic of coevolution at a small geographic scale.

The level of defense against great spotted cuckoo (Clamator glandarius) parasitism in different European populations of magpie (Pica pica) depends on selection pressures due to parasitism and gene flow between populations, which suggests the existence of coevolutionary hot spots within a European metapopulation. A mosaic of coevolution is theoretically possible at small geographical scales and ...

Genetic, environmental and maternal effects on magpie nestling-fitness traits under different nutritional conditions: a new experimental approach

Rearing full siblings under different environmental conditions allows partitioning of the total phenotypic variance of a trait into its genetic and environmental components. This, in natural bird populations, is usually achieved by cross-fostering experimental designs. We estimated genetic and environmental components of nestling-fitness traits using an alternative experimental approach in a ma...
